I recently had the pleasure of attending the 7th Applications of Intelligent Systems (APPIS 2025) conference, held at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC). Since its inception in 2018, APPIS has carved out a unique space for researchers and practitioners in AI, machine learning, and data science to move beyond siloed discussions.

The Venue: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

The conference took place at the Campus Universitario del Obelisco. The single-track format was a highlight, ensuring that every attendee shared the same journey through the presentations. This structure naturally fostered deep discussions during coffee breaks and networking sessions, perfectly aligning with the conference’s aim of forming new research alliances.

My Contribution: OptiGuide

During the main track sessions (January 19-23), I presented my talk: “OptiGuide - Sequential Optimal Design Strategies”.

At its core, OptiGuide addresses a critical challenge in modern data science: how to collect the right data efficiently. In many industrial applications, data acquisition is expensive or time-consuming. My talk focused on:

  • Efficiency: Using sequential strategies to minimize the number of experiments needed.
  • Adaptability: How Optimal Design can shift focus as new data points are collected.
  • Practicality: Moving these theoretical frameworks into tools that assist scientists and engineers in real-time decision-making.

The Q&A session provided valuable insights into how these strategies could be integrated across different disciplines represented at the conference, from pattern recognition to complex intelligent systems.

Key Takeaways

The beauty of APPIS is the “enjoyable time together” stated in its mission. Beyond the formal talks, the working groups and casual meetings allowed for a genuine exchange of ideas. Whether discussing the future of LLMs or the nuances of Bayesian optimization, the takeaway was clear: the most significant breakthroughs happen at the intersection of different disciplines.

I look forward to applying the feedback received on OptiGuide to our future projects and continuing the collaborations sparked under the Gran Canarian sun.
